Puffins of Tory Island.

Tory Island is a remote, inhabited, island lying some 11 km off the north-west Donegal coast. It is approximately 4 km in length and 1 km in width. The inhabited island is a Special Protection Area (SPA) under the E.U. Birds Directive, of special conservation interest for the following species: Fulmar, Corncrake, Razorbill and Puffin. Beautiful lighthouse on Tory Tory Island is of particular conservation importance as it supports a nationally important population of Corncrake ( Crex crex ), which has increased in recent years and now represent over 16% of the all-Ireland total. This is down to the conservation work of NPWS, BWI and importantly, the locals that live on the island. Their decline is mostly due to intensive farming practices, therefore, Corncrake are confined to areas where difficult terrain precludes the use of machinery. Tory fits this criteria and with the addition of an abundance of nettles on the island, which is a preferred habitat type for Corncrake. W

Find it Fridays: Vol 1

Find It Fridays A where's wally of seabirds So, I thought it might be a nice idea to do this 'Find it Fridays' blog post. I thought of doing it last year, but never got around to doing it. Hopefully, this will help me to post more regularly. Basically every Friday (maybe not every Friday) for the next year (well, until I run out of photos) I will post a photo with a camouflaged/hard to see nest with eggs, chicks or maybe a species of seabird mixed amongst other species. I will post the picture and then on the next blog post (of another Find It Fridays i.e Vol 2) I will re-post the photo, identify where the egg, chick, seabird etc, is! Over the last few weeks, we have been surveying Gull and Tern colonies. Their eggs (especially Terns) and chicks can be very camouflaged and difficult to see. Therefore, it is important you do not go walking through their colony to prevent destroying eggs and also not to disturb breeding birds. The Photo below was taken at Inishmu

Find It Fridays A where's wally of seabirds Welcome back to another Find It Fridays. Basically every Friday (maybe not every Friday) for the next year (well, until I run out of photos) I will post a photo with a camouflaged/hard to see nest with eggs, chicks or maybe a species of seabird mixed amongst other species. I will post the picture and then on the following blog post (of another Find It Fridays) I will re-post the photo and identify where the egg, chick, seabird etc, is! Last weeks eggs are identified below. This photo below was also taken when surveying terns on Tory Island, an Island off the North West of Ireland.
